Mass mediaÔÇÖs role to prevent oppression against women emphasised

DHAKA:  State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury Wednesday urged mass media to play a vital role along with the government to prevent oppression against women.
    
“Government alone cannot stop repression against women and ensure their rights. A comprehensive effort is a must," she told a seminar.  

Ministry of Women and Children Affairs organized the seminar on ‘Role of Mass Media to Prevent Oppression Against Women and Gender Equality’ at a city hotel.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry Hafizur Rahman chaired it.

During the seminar, three awareness campaigns were launched which will be broadcasted in different mass media.

The government was determined to prevent repression against women, the state minister said.

She said the Domestic Violence Prevention Act-2010 is going to be passed in the next session of the parliament.  

Shirin underscored need for proper implementation of law and emphasised on the role of family in preventing torture against women.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki also spoke at the seminar.
