DINAJPUR: The fourth anniversary of Phulbari tragedy was observed Thursday commemorating the death of several people in shooting by law enforcers during protest against coal-mining bid by a foreign company on this day.

Different organisations and political parties across the country marked the day through elaborate programmes, including the hoisting of black flag, wearing black badges, mourning rally, placing floral wreaths on the martyrs` graveyard, prayers and Iftar Mahfil.

Three people were killed on the day by official count and over a hundred injured during protests by the National Committee for the Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports against open-pit method of mining from the coalmine at Phulbari in Dinajpur.

Among the wounded, 50 received bullet injuries.

After a long struggle, the protest came to an end as the government assured them of meeting the demonstrators` demands.

The Communist Party of Bangladesh, Workers` Party, Revolutionary Workers` Party, Ganasanghati Andolan, Workers Party (reconstituted), National Front, Juba Maitri, Chhatra Maitri, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Socialist Students` Front and Green Voyage among those observed the day.
