CHITTAGONG: Police arrested an activist of the opposition BNP early Monday for distributing leaflets containing smear campaign against ruling Awami League party-backed mayoral candidate ABM Mahiuddin Chowdhury.

Zillur Rahman, 24, was held in the port city’s Bondortila area while distributing leaflets at about 2:30 am, said police.

“The arrested person admitted that the leaflets were being distributed as per directive of city BNP president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury,” said Assistant Commissioner of CMP detective branch Jahangir.

“As propaganda against any candidate is a violation of electoral code of conduct, the magistrate concerned, according to the electoral law, will take action against him through summary trial,” he told banglanews24.com.bd.

On Zillur’s information, police later raided a storehouse of a councilor of 39 South Halishohor ward BNP, but found no more leaflets.

Zillur Rahman, a degree student of Chittagong Govt. City College, is a resident of Chittagong Free Port residential area.

Mayoral candidates ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and M Manzur Alam, backed by ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP respectively, are busy with last-minute campaigns for the CCC polls slated for June 17.
