Accidents: 10 killed, 51 injured

DHAKA: At least 10 people were killed and 51 injured in road accidents in different districts Saturday, as fatal fallouts from bad driving continued to take its toll every passing day.

Reports from banglanews correspondents said two were killed in Laxmipur and Gaibandha and one each in Dhaka’s Dhamrai, Rajshahi, Brahmanbaria, Bogra, Gopalganj and Faridpur.

In Laxmipur, a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a bus at Jaksin Bazar at noon left two dead and one injured. The diseased were identified as Md Rubel,18, and Md Rashed, 25.

Police seized the killer bus but the driver and helper managed to flee the scene.

In Dhamrai area, a head-on collision between a truck and a private car on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway killed one person in the morning, according to witnesses. The deceased was Helal, 32, driver of the private car.

Sources said a Dhaka-bound truck rammed a private car in Bathuli area, killing Helal on the spot.

In Rajshahi, a truck carrying onions tumbled into a ditch as its driver lost control over steering on Kharkhori Bypass, killing one on the spot and injuring five.

The deceased Jamal, 35, was an onion trader.

Injured Sultan, 40, Momin, 20, Fitu, 40, Monirul, 32, and Tofazzol Hossain Kalu, 32, were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Tofazzol Hossain Kalu was “in critical condition”, medical said sources.

In Brahmanbaria, a motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on the a-Sylhet Highway in Ashuganj upazila in the morning. The deceased, Shafiqur Rahman, 60, of Kamaura Dakkhinpara village, was a teacher of Mohisar Primary School in the upazila.

Mohammad Sohel Mia, cousin of the deceased, told banglanews that a Sylhet-bound speeding covered van ran over the motorcycle of Shafiqur, leaving him dead on the spot.

One person was killed and at least 10 were injured critically as a passenger bus fell into a roadside ditch in Sherpur of Bogra in the morning.

Quoting eyewitnesses, OC Amirul Islam of Sherpur Police Station told banglanews that a Chittagong-bound bus of Asha Enterprise from Gaibandha tumbled into the ditch as its driver lost control, killing Azahar Ali, 35, on the spot and injuring 10.

The injured were admitted into Sherpur Upazila Health Complex and Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

In Gopalganj, a woman was run over by a bus at Dasherhat at noon. The deceased was identified as Rokeya Begum, 35, wife of Sirajul Haque Munshi.

In Faridpur, Aiub Ali Sarder, 45, was killed as a recklessly driven bus hit a ‘Nasimon’.

In Magura, a passenger bus fell into a ditch as its driver lost his control over steering on the Magura-Narail highway, injuring twenty-five. Seriously injured five passengers were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.

In Gaibandha, a human hauler turned turtle on Jumarbari-Sonatola road, killing two on the spot and injuring 10. The deceased were identified as Fazlu Mia, 50, and his son-in-law Hukum Ali, 35.

The injured were sent to Sonatola Upazila Health Complex and Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
