Siblings killed as launch crushes them at Sadarghat

DHAKA: Two siblings were crushed to death being rammed by a launch while they were getting down from another one on arrival at Sadarghat on Sunday morning.

The deceased were identified as Nashima, 12, and her brother Al-Amin, 9, hailed from Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal.

SI Mohammad Imran of Sadarghat Police Box said the accident occurred at about 6:30am as motor-launch Mayur-2 knocked them while getting on a boat from the backside of Coco-1, the launch that brought them from Barisal on their return journey after the eid vacation.

“Nasima died instantly as the launch propeller rolled over her body,” says a spot account of the tragic end of the girl, daughter of a rickshaw-puller, Abdur Rahman.

Critically injured in the accident, her brother Al-Amin was rushed to Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital where the duty doctor also declared him dead.

Nasima and Amin came with their father and brother to Dhaka to go to their Kamrangirchar residence by Coco-1 from Barisal, said police.

Having lost both their children forever, the poor parents kept beating their breasts in heartrending wails on the bank of Buriganga.

The owners of the killer launch were trying to reach a settlement with the bereaved family, said the SI.
