Legal notice seeking ‘No-Vote’

DHAKA: A lawyer on Monday issued a legal notice to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and law secretary seeking provision for no-vote system.

On behalf of Barrister Mohammad Shahriar Mazid, Barrister Redwan Ahmed issued the legal notice to incorporate the provision in the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

The notice said that there was a provision [31(A)] on no-vote in the RPO of 2007-2008. As per the RPO, Bangladeshi citizens, for the first time, got the right to cast no-vote but the Election Commission (EC) cancelled the provision after the 9th General Election.

The lawyer Shahriar Mazid requested the defendants to restore the provision otherwise he will file a writ petition with the High court.

There are 14 countries in the world with no-vote provision.
