DHAKA: Finally, acknowledging their wrong treatment as ‘negligence’, Labaid Hospital authority agreed to take the responsibility of better treatment of Masum, a Dhaka University student.
The hospital authority will send Masum to Singapore and compensate his family if the doctors in Singapore declared Masum’s cancer as incurable, sources from DU proctor’s office said.
The decision came from a meeting that continued till Monday midnight at the residence of DU vice chancellor AASM Arefin Siddique with the presence of Masum’s family members and teachers’ from his department.
On behalf of Labaid, Managing Director of the hospital Dr AM Shamim, director of managing committee Dr Mahbubul Islam along with accused doctor Amjad Hossain were present in the meeting.
DU Proctor Professor Amjad Ali told banglanews, “It has been decided to take Masum to Singapore for better treatment. He will be given chemotherapy if it will be possible to save him.”
“If the doctors say that there is no possibility of saving him, we will return him to country and his family will be compensated with not less than Tk 30 lakhs,” he added.
Ruling Awami League MP of Dhaka-7 constituency Dr Mostafa Jalal Mahiuddin and vice chancellor of BSMMU Dr Pran Gopal Datta mediated the meeting.
Victim’s family members alleged that Masum, a 4th-year student of Political Science department in Dhaka University, underwent a tumor operation from the hospital under Dr Amjad Hossain in 2012, when the doctor failed to identify the cancer.
