5 Bangladeshis arrested in India

DHAKA: Indian police have arrested five alleged Bangladeshi nationals involved in several cases of bag lifting in Pune of Maharashtra of India.

Among the five suspects is a woman identified as Reshma Asadulla Shaikh (25). The other four include Mintu Sattar Havaldar (30), Mohammed Yusuf Mohammed Saleban Nakti (30), Mohammed Bilayat Hamejuddin Hawaldar (26), Mushraf Lashkar Shaikh (42), all from Bangladesh.

Police have arrested them under the charges of theft and violation of Passport Act.

An offence has been registered at Yerwada police station following a complaint by Baban Maruti Chavan (39), a resident of Kolhewadi in Khadakwasla.

Police said Chavan is into fabrication business and had visited Warje Malwadi area a few days ago with his two friends in a car. They were looking for a painter when they met Reshma who knew them. She told them that her brother is a painter and took them to Yerawada to meet him.

In Yerawada, Reshma called the other four suspects who allegedly duped Chavan and his friend and fled with Rs 2 lakh in cash which was kept in their car.

Chavan lodged a complaint and Yerwada police managed to trace the suspects by investigating the details of phone calls between complainant and Reshma. Police arrested the suspects on Sunday and their interrogation revealed they are natives of Bangladesh and had illegally migrated to India a few months ago.

A magistrate court remanded the suspects in police custody till October 17. Senior police inspector Kishor Jadhav is monitoring the investigation. Police are probing whether the suspects are involved in more cases of thefts in the city. Investigation is also on to find out whether more Bangladeshi nationals had come to the city with these suspects.
