Former Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Sayedul Haque, also known as Barrister Suman, was arrested in Dhaka early Tuesday.
He was apprehended from his sister’s residence in Mirpur-6 around 1:30 am, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nazrul Islam of Pallabi police station.
"Acting on a tip-off, Mirpur police conducted a raid and arrested the former MP. He is currently being held in custody at Pallabi police station," the OC confirmed.
According to him, due to damage to the lock-up at Mirpur Model Police Station during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Barrister Suman was taken to Pallabi station.
Suman has been arrested in connection with a case related to the killing of a student during the protests.
Prior to his arrest, Suman posted on his verified Facebook account, saying, "I am going with the police. See you in court. Pray for me, everyone."
In a video message shared on the same platform, the former MP stated that he had been in Dhaka and had not left the city since August 5. For security reasons, he said, he had remained out of the public eye.
Suman was elected as an independent candidate for the Habiganj-4 constituency in the general election held on January 7.
