The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has strongly condemned the attack on the Jatiya Party’s central office in Kakrail, terming it contradictory to democracy and the spirit of the July Uprising.
In a statement, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi last night (September 5), the party said such incidents of arson and attack would only "create confusion and frustration among the public about the hopes of building a democratic state and society after the July Uprising".
“This is contradictory to democracy and the spirit of July Uprising,” Rizvi said. He also said that while differences of opinion are natural, preventing freedom of expression through force reflects authoritarian tendencies.
Rizvi further emphasized that the existence of multi-party politics is inevitable in a true democracy, adding that a party’s survival should depend on the will of the people, not threats or violence. “Stopping the activities of a political party by creating fear through threats, attacks, or violent behavior is not consistent with the universal principles of multi-party democracy,” he said.
The BNP urged all concerned to uphold democratic values and refrain from actions that undermine political pluralism and people’s expectations of a democratic society.
