CHITTAGONG:  Opposition lawmaker and BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was arrested Wednesday after a long holdup in his car in the port city on charge of violating electoral rules.

The outspoken BNP leader was shown arrested in a case against him for giving “fake” statement about the voter list. He was taken under Bakulia Thana custody.

Assistant Returning Officer Md Farhad Hossain filed the case on June 10.

Sources said police blocked the motorcade of SQ Chowdhury while passing by Bakulia Police Station in an “illegal” election campaign in breach of the pre-election ban.

He had been confined in the car for more than three hours before arrest, witnesses said about the holdup.

On information, hundreds of followers of the BNP leader rushed in and laid siege to the Thana complex.

Jahangir Alam, Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch, told banglannews24.com.bd that the BNP standing committee member was detained for “violating the electoral code of conduct”.

Salahuddin said that he was coming from the house of BNP leader Abdul Mannan in Chondnaish area of the port city after attending a party.

“Police arrested me in aid of the government-backed mayor candidate in the election,” he said.
