SC upholds Khaleda’s bail in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case

DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that granted bail for BNP Chief Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.

The apex court also ordered to dissolve an appeal that challenged the 5-year jail sentence for her, by July 31.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hussain announced the verdict Wednesday (May 16).

However, lawyers now think that Khaleda Zia won’t get release from the jail as she hasn’t been given bail in another case of her too.

On Tuesday (May 15), the court fixed Wednesday to deliver the verdict Wednesday, as the hearing came to an end earlier.

The High Court on March 12 granted 4-month bail for Khaleda in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Earlier, she landed in jail on February 8, after being sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the same case.

Afterwards, the apex court stayed the HC bail order following the petitions filed by the ACC and the government.
