DHAKA: The government has filed an appeal with the Chamber Court of Appellate Division seeking stay on the High Court order that granted bail to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for six months in two sabotage cases filed in Cumilla.

The Chamber Justice Hassan Foyez Siddiqui fixed Tuesday (May 29) for hearing the petition.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Dr. Md. Bashir Ullah moved for the state while lawyers Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammad Ali, and Zainul Abedin moved for Khaleda Zia in the court.

Earlier in the day, the HC bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hassan granted bail to Khaleda Zia in two cases; however, rejected bail in a libel case of Narail as it had not been placed before it.

Earlier on Sunday (May 27), the hearing of the three cases ended.

Of three cases, two were filed in Cumilla on charge of plotting to carry out subversive acts and another in Narail on charge of defamation.

Some people were burnt to death and at least 20 others injured when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus during BNP-led alliance's movement in Jogmohanpur area under Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla in 2015.

In this case, June 7 is fixed for further hearing for Khaleda Zia’s bail.

However, on December 21, 2015, Khaleda Zia questioned the actual number of Liberation War martyrs at a discussion held in Dhaka, which was broadcast in media. Besides, she made objectionable remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Later, a defamation case was filed against her with a Narail court on December 14, 2015.

Khaleda Zia did not appear in court at due time. Therefore, an arrest warrant was issued.
