DHAKA: BNP leaders and activists brought out a sudden procession in Dhaka’s Shantinagar, led by its Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, demanding immediate release of their party chief Khaleda Zia.
The rally, brought out on the main road adjacent to Shantinagar Bazar, also protested the trial of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
They were heard chanting angry slogans in the brief rally begun around 7:45am Wednesday (August 29).
Among others, BNP executive committee member Advocate Nipun Roy was seen participating.
“Bangladesh now is being run following the ‘rules of violation’. Therefore, Khaleda Zia, who is the non-compromising leader to restore the democratic rights of people, have been grilled illegally and the party Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman have been given punishment in false case,” Rizvi told the rally.
He urged everyone to stand against the ‘oppression and torture’.
Rizvi earlier led several sudden rallies in the capital city, demanding the BNP chief’s release from jail.
A Dhaka court sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years of rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.
