JESSORE: An activist of ruling Awami League’s wing Swecchasebak League was killed as a bus ploughed into the crowd of a rally in Jhikargacha of Jessore Friday (August 31).
The deceased was identified as Farhad, 25.
Besides, at least four other were injured. They were admitted to Jessore 250-bed hospital.
Swecchasebak League unit was holding a rally at the upazila parishad intersection of Jhikargacha, around 5pm, marking National Mourning Day.
All of a sudden, a vacant bus entered the rally and hit several persons.
Critically injured five activists of the organizing body were rescued and sent to a local hospital. They were later shifted to Jessore 250-bed General Hospital.
Of the injured, Farhad succumbed to his injuries around 10am while was being taken to Dhaka for improvised treatment, Jhikargacha upazial Swecchasebak League unit President Shamsur Rahman told Banglanews.
The bus hit the leaders and activists on the rally, after losing control and hitting a road island, said Jhikargacha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Kamal Hossain.
The bus driver and helper fled the scene. Efforts are on to nab them, added the OC.
