DHAKA:   Police arrested Barrister Mainul Hossain in a defamation case filed with a Rangpur court for his remarks on TV ‘defaming’ journalist Masuda Bhatti.

Mainul, a former adviser to the military-controlled caretaker government, was arrested from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence in city on Monday night (October 22).

Mainul was taken to the DB office on Mintoo Road in the capital, Mahbub Alam, a joint commissioner at Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch told Banglanews.

DB officials said he will be produced before a Dhaka court in the Rangpur case on Tuesday (October 23).

Mainul was involved in newly-formed political alliance Jatiya Oikyafront, which comprises BNP, Gono Forum, JSD (Rab) and Nagorik Oikya, launched on October 13.

Mainul’s appalling comment, about Masuda Bhatti on a talk show broadcast on October 16, triggered outrage in media.
