Barrister Mainul Hosein denied bail, sent to jail

DHAKA: A Dhaka court sent Barrister Mainul Hosein to jail after rejecting his bail plea in a case filed for defaming a journalist Masuda Bhatti on television talk show.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaisarul Islam passed the order after Mainul was produced before the court on Tuesday (Oct 23).

Mainul, a former adviser to the military-controlled caretaker government, was arrested from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence in city on Monday night (October 22).

He was then taken to Detective Branch (DB) of DMP office in Dhaka for questioning.

A woman by the name Mili Maya Begum filed the case with Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.

Mainul was involved in newly-formed political alliance Jatiya Oikyafront, which comprises BNP, Gono Forum, JSD (Rab) and Nagorik Oikya, launched on October 13.

Mainul’s appalling comment, about Masuda Bhatti on a talk show broadcast on October 16, triggered outrage in media.
