SYLHET: An activist of the ruling party’s student wing Chhatra League was reportedly stabbed to death in Sylhet city Thursday (Oct 25) evening.

The deceased was identified as Hussain Al Jahid, 20, a ninth-grader at Upashahar Simantik School and follower of a group belongs to Jubo League leader Minnat.

Minnat group was a subordinate group of local ward councillor Saleh Ahmed Selim.

Local sources said Jahid was involved in a rivalry with the BCL activists and followers of Jakaria Mahmud group—Sumon, Chanchal, Niaz, Tuhin, Jubayer, Jikey and Rahat, following dispute over senior-junior.

Jahid and his companions sustained injuries while his rival BCL activists attacked them in front of Govt Tibbia College in Sonarpara, in the evening.

They were whisked-off to Osmani Medical College Hospital where the on-duty physician pronounced Jahid dead.

“Jahid was murdered by stabbing with knife following previous enmity. Being informed, police visited the spot,” Sylhet Shahparan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akhtar Hossain told Banglanews.

Contacted, Sylhet City Corporation ward-22 councillor and Awami League leader Advocate Saleh Ahmed Selim denied to lead any group.

“I have no group. Having supporters is normal. This murder incident might have happened following previous rivalry among the boys of junior level,” he said.

However, residents of the deceased’s area—Tero Ratan and BCL activists staged agitation by blocking a road at the Upashahar point. Several vehicles were reported to be vandalized. Police went to the spot to bring the situation under control.
