One carrying out campaign, another one being punished: Fakhrul

DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said party chairperson Khaleda Zia is being punished in fabricated cases while Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina is holding rallies using helicopters.

The senior BNP leader made the reaction in party’s Naya Paltan party office on Monday (October 29) immediately after the verdict issued in Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

He said, “Politics is being pushed away by filling thousands of cases across the country. Awami League has become bankrupted as a political party and that is why they are using the state mechanism to cling on to power. The ruling party is trying to bring back one party-rule in country. However, people had not tolerated it in the past and will not accept it this time also.”

Expressing frustration over the verdict, Fakrul said, “While the Prime Minister is electioneering using helicopter, Khaleda Zia is being punished in prison in false cases. Thousands of BNP activists and leaders are also being punished in made-up cases. A fair parliamentary election can not be held under the circumstances.”

Earlier on Monday (Oct 29), a Dhaka special court sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and 3 others to 7 years jail each, in much-hyped Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

Khaleda Zia is in Dhaka central jail since February 8 after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust case.
