JOYPURHAT: A court here sent 45 leaders and activists of Awami League to jail in a case filed over death of two persons in a clash among two rival groups of ruling party in Kalai upazila.

Rejecting the bail pleas filed by the accused, Judge Mohammad Iqbal Bahar of Joypurhat Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Sunday (April 7) passed the order. 

Matrai UP chairman and district AL member ANM Shawkat Habib Talukder, Udaypur UP chairman and UP AL president Wazed Ali Dada were among the 45 accused in the case.

Earlier on March 16,   two persons were killed and at least eight others injured in a clash among two rival groups of Awami League in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat. 

The deceased are—Aftab Sarker, 55, son of late Abdus Samad of Monnapara village and Ratan, 48, son of Charu Mohanta of Mahisya para. Both were followers of newly elected Kalai upazila chairman Minfuzur Rahman Milon. 

A dispute ensued among the followers of Udaypur union parishad chairman Wazed Ali Dada and Awami League district unit organizing secretary Minfuzur Rahman Milon after Milon elected upazila chairman winning the polls on Mar 10.

Following the dispute, the followers got engaged in a clash at Moslemganj Bazar area of Udoypur Saturday (Mar 16) night, leaving 10 persons injured. 

Of them, Aftab and Ratan succumbed to injuries at early hours of Sunday (Mar 17).
