T20 World Cup 2022 got off to flyer as reigning champions got swept away by Tasman neighbor New Zealand by 89 runs in a one-sided contest. For the winners, it was a sweet revenge of the T20 World Cup 2021 final in Dubai.
New Zealand raced to 200/3. Southee and Boult with seam and swing and Santner with left arm spin tormented awe struck Australia packing them for 111.
.
Batting first Kiwis paid back Aussies in their own coins with Finn blasting the Australians with a blistering 42 of 14 deliveries. Such was flamboyance of Finn that 51 runs were scored in only 4.1 overs when he left the crease. His partner Conway held the innings together maintaining the momentum scoring unbeaten 92 in 58 deliveries.
New Zealand scored 200/3 the second highest by any team against Australia in T20 international by any team. Kiwi bowlers crashed Australian batters with seam and swing .All they could master was 111.
The dominance of Kiwis was absolute. Kiwis set many new records. Over the last 11 years they did not win any match against Australia in any format. Aussies did not see much of the new kiwi sensation Finn Allen. He smashed Mitchell Starc all over the park in the very first over. Neither Hazelwood nor Pat Cummins could tame him before he did the damage. The fluency and flamboyance that he set kept Kiwis going as Conway took charge after Finn left. Chasing 201 against Kiwi bowling and excellent fielding was never easy.
Southee (3/6) and Boult (2/24) swung the ball prodigiously under the light. Warner was unlucky to be played on in bizarre fashion. None but Maxwell could stay at the wicket as wickets kept tumbling with left arm spinner Santner joining the party taking 3/31.
Such a huge win in the group of death will do a lot of good for Kiwis. Australia will require regrouping soon as England, Srilanka, and Afghanistan will not be so easy teams to beat.
