In the Asian Cup qualifiers, Bangladesh are set to play their second home match today against Hong Kong China. After a disappointing 2–1 home defeat to Singapore in the opening game, the red-and-greens are seeking a turnaround.
Head coach Javier Cabrera and his players insist they are thinking of nothing but victory. The fixture is not only about the points table; it has also become a stage for a contest between expatriate footballers from both countries.
Bangladesh will field Hamza Choudhury, Jamal Bhuiyan and Samit Som, while the opposition include experienced players of Brazilian, German and Japanese origin.
With just one point from one draw and one defeat in two matches, Bangladesh’s position in Group C is precarious. Against Singapore, Bangladesh took the lead through a goal but failed to hold on.
To bolster the squad, English Premier League player Hamza Choudhury and Canada-based Samit Som have joined the team. This will be Hamza’s fourth match for the national side. United States–based defender Zayan Ahmed could make his debut. Italy-based Fahmidul Islam and Tariq Kazi are also in the squad.
Injuries are a major concern for Bangladesh. Suman Reza and Mohammad Ibrahim have already been ruled out. Captain Topu Barman and midfielder Al Amin are not fully fit. Even so, coach Cabrera has not lost confidence. At the pre-match press conference he said, “Injuries are somewhat of a problem, but our preparation is good. Those who are available are capable of delivering three points.”
With one win and one draw for four points, Hong Kong are well placed in the group. Victory in Dhaka would take them a step closer to the Asian Cup proper. Since 2022, Brazilian-born left-back Fernando Augusto and winger Everton Camargo have played for Hong Kong; both could pose a significant threat to Bangladesh. Camargo has scored 10 goals in 19 internationals. Winger Mahama Awal said, “Playing in Bangladesh is challenging, but we are prepared and confident.”
Today’s match could be Bangladesh’s turning point in the battle to stay alive in the Asian Cup. Failure to win would virtually end their hopes of advancing from the qualifiers. Bangladesh therefore take the field in a genuine fight for survival.
