Bangladesh opted to bat after losing the toss in Mirpur on Saturday (October 18) as they looked to reset against West Indies following a 3–0 ODI series defeat to Afghanistan.
Handed a debut cap before play by Saif Hassan, Mahidul Islam Ankon became Bangladesh’s 154th men’s ODI player. Left-hander Soumya Sarkar also returned to the XI.
“We wanted to bat as well. This is our home ground and we’re confident on this wicket,” captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz said at the toss.
He said, “We talk a lot about the top order’s responsibility, but this is a new game. I hope everyone understands their role and stays positive. Bad days happen, but it’s a new day and we aim to be better.”
He added that Bangladesh had picked two pace bowlers, three spinners and seven specialist batters.
West Indies, buoyed by a 2–1 series win over Pakistan, entered with momentum.
