LONDON: Australia were 43 for one when play resumed following a 12-minute stoppage for bad light shortly after lunch on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan at Lord`s here on Tuesday.

Only two overs had been bowled after the interval when, with Pakistan seamer Umar Gul preparing to bowl, veteran South African umpire Rudi Koertzen and English colleague Ian Gould took the players off the field at 1.46pm local time (1246GMT).

But the skies above Lord`s brightened quickly.

Simon Katich was 12 not out and Australia captain Ricky Ponting 20 not out after Pakistan had won the toss in a match which started 90 minutes late because of rain.

This was the first of a two-Test series.
