The FA Cup fourth round weekend started with a big shock on Friday night as Manchester United were beaten on home soil by Middlesbrough.
Championship side Boro won 8-7 in a penalty shootout with Anthony Elanga skying over the crossbar to break a run of 15 successful spot-kicks.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored United's fourth goal in the shootout, but the former Real Madrid star had missed the target with a penalty in normal time.
With the scores level at 0-0, Paul Pogba was brought down by Anfernee Dijksteel in the 19th minute. Ronaldo looked confident as he stepped up, but he drilled his low shot wide of the goalkeeper's right-hand post.
It looked like that miss would not matter when Jadon Sancho latched onto a Bruno Fernandes pass to give United the lead just six minutes after Ronaldo's gaffe.
United dominated for much of the game at Old Trafford, bossing possession with a share of over 70% and registering 30 shots to their opponents' 6.
But they were wasteful and Boro punished them for it when Matt Crooks, who spent seven years in United's youth teams between 2002 and 2009, levelled the tie in the second half.
United missed more chances before the game became a tense affair in extra-time.
Middlesbrough won the coin-toss and went first in the shootout.
United goalkeeper Dean Henderson was unable to make a single save from eight attempts. Boro's keeper didn't block any of United's efforts either, but that did not stop him celebrating wildly after Elanga's miss decided the game in the underdogs' favour.
United have now lost seven of their last eight penalty shootouts.
