Sk Russel return to winning track

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Ltd returned to the winning ways after seven matches defeating the newcomers Swadhinata Krira Sangha by 2-1 goals in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League football, powered by Bashundhara Group at the Bashundhara Kings Arena of Bashundhara Sports Complex in the capital on Saturday.

The first-leg of the league came to an end when Sheikh Russel earned their first victory at their home venue. Earlier, they played two back-to-back draws in their previous two matches after suffering five consecutive defeats.

The day’s important victory also helped Sheikh Russel to avoid relegation temporarily as they jumped up to the 8th position in the 12-team league with 10 points from two wins, four draws and five defeats while Swadhinata KS remained at the bottom place with their previous credit of 6 points from one win, three draws and seven defeats.

On Saturday, Sheikh Russel took a 1-0 lead when midfielder Manik Hossain Molla headed the ball home, off a corner from defender Rahmat Mia in the 13th minute.

After seven minutes, the former champions were awarded a penalty as Swadhinata’s midfielder Joynal Abedin Dipu illegally fouled Sheikh Russel’s forward Mannaf Rabby inside the box.

Kyrgyzs defender Aizar Akmatov seized the chance and made no mistake to convert the spot-kick correctly in the 20th minute (2-0).
