England Trails by 16 runs with 3 first innings wickets at hand.
Cricket Mecca witnessed yet another day of fascinating contest of cherry and willow as 17 wickets fell on not too difficult to bat wicket.
This is a test commemorating the 70th years of coronation of English Queen Elizabeth who incidentally is the Queen of New Zealand as well.
New Zealand opting to bat against England steered by two Kiwi born cricket stars Ben Stokes and Brendon McCollum succumbed to a combination of a rookie Matthew Potts (4/13) and veteran of 175 tests James Anderson (4/66) getting bundled out for 132.
Home team was looking good when the first wicket partnership of Hales (25) and Zak Crawley (43) raced to 59 in no time.
But as soon as Kyle Jamieson picked up Crawley England collapsed.
7 English wickets fell to superbly controlled pace attack of Boult (2/15), Southee (2/40) and Jamieson (2/20).
England finished the day at 116/7 still 16 runs in arrears. This is what is test cricket is all about.
Only few days back in Chottogram Bangladesh and Sri Lanka playing over five days could not even complete three innings.
Now at Lords on day one almost two innings got completed.
The feature of the day was definitely brilliant baptism of English Youngster Matthew Potts.
He could not dream anything better to bowl with James Anderson playing his 175th test.
Potts was very impressive. New Zealand opting to bat was soon reeling at 4/12 by the 10th over.
The routing continued till 7/45 by the 25th over when Colin de Granhomme and Tim Southee resurrected a little bit. But vistors got bundled out for 132.
It appeared that England under new team management would rock.
England started responding well as Crawley looked in rollicking form.
The first wicket partnership put on 56 runs in 43 balls with Crawley contributing 43.
But as soon as Jamieson broke through English batting crumbled like cookies.
As many as 7 English wickets fell for addition of 41 runs. Home team was tariling by 16 runs when stumps were drawn for the day.
It was another day in a test match when morning did not show the day.
