Player of The Match: Joe Roots
After three days of pendulum swinging England riding on immaculate Joe Root unbeaten century (115*) and unbroken 120 runs 6th wicket partnership between him and Ben Foakes (32*) won the Lords test with 5 sessions of the match still left for play.
This historic test will go down in the record book as an unique battle of nerves where quality batsmen and bowlers of either team performed. A great win planned and executed clinically by new English team management Ben Stokes and Bredon McCollum.
Batting first the tourists were bundled out for 132 in the first innings on day one. Debutant Mat Potts (4/13) pairing with veteran Anderson (4/66) playing his 175th test. New Zealand bounced back with their quality pace attack restricting England to 149 all out. Southee (4/55) Trent Boult (3/21) and Kyle Jamieson (2/20) were the tormentors.
English bowlers again managed keeping visitors honest getting them all out for 285 all out in the second innings despite of excellent late middle-order fightback of Daryl Mitchell (108) and Tom Bundell (96). Still visitors posted a 276 runs lead. They pressurized on the home side reducing England to 4/69 once again. But first Root and Stokes adding 90 runs in the 5th wicket salvaged England. Root relieved from his captaincy displayed his mastery in his 115 * runs match-winning innings. Wicket-keeper batsman Ben Foakes (32*) gave him excellent support in the unbroken 120 runs 6th wicket partnership.
England won by 5 wickets. Rest of the test world has lot to learn about masterly display of batting and bowling of the quality players on challenging situations. Champion players can adjust to any condition. Wickets and circumstances are mere excuses.
