Whatever may have been in the history, whatever be the recent dwindling form of Bengal tigers in test cricket the two matches series against West Indies starting provides offers a unique opportunity for rewriting a few pages.
Bangladesh stands an even chance of proving equal to their task of winning the series.
West Indies chose to test a few less experienced pacers and Bangladesh under star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has every reason to give a better account.
Of course, for that happening Bangladesh must improve a lot in all three departments.
Some recent changes may lead Bangladesh for doing that.
All know that domestic cricket of Bangladesh no longer supports growth of Bangladeshi cricketers to the international level for playing consistently competitive cricket in test.
BCB plans and programs do not appear conducive for longer version cricket.
Not to speaking of test matches played abroad even on own grounds Bangladesh lost tests against rookie Afghanistan, West Indies, got whitewashed against weakened West Indies and strong Pakistan.
Only few weeks back Bangladesh proved second best to Sri Lanka at home after getting blown away by South Africa on tour.
Bangladesh's test record over 22 years makes a sad commentary.
Even then we would say a realistic chance has appeared now for turning around.
BCB has taken a smart decision to relive Mominul Haq of his leadership and make Shakib Captain for his third term. Trust that would serve better for both Shakib and Mominul.
Shakib with added responsibility will be more committed for the sake of his reputation.
Mominul can concentrate on his depleted batting. Shakib can make more independent decisions without being dictated.
Of course, Bangladesh would miss Mushfique given leave for performing Haj, Taskin and Shoriful.
We are not sure whether Mehedy Miraj is 100%. Apart from that Tamim, Joy, Shanto, Mominul should change the state of poor top-order batting. Shakib in this batting lineup may bat at number 5 with prolific Litton, quality Nurul Sohan following at 6 and 7.
Bangladesh against not too strong WI bowling should score 400 runs if bats first in the test. But that may be easy said than done.
Seniors Tamim, Shakib, Mominul should produce longer innings. Relieved from Wicket keeping duties Litton should continue in his great batting verve.
Bangladesh should play with 3 seam bowlers and Taijul. Mustafiz back in red ball cricket would be expected giving a breakthrough. Ebadad will be his partner.
Would suggest giving Raza a break as the third pacer.
The bulk of the bowling would need to be done by Shakib and Taijul.
They may turn match-winners if batsmen give them enough runs to bowl against and fielders field smartly.
Selectors should have included experienced Anamul Haq Bijoy in the test squad at the beginning instead of adding him as cover for Yasir Rabbi.
Admirers cannot dream but also cannot help expecting Bangladesh performing better.
Sponsor Walton named the Series after Padma Bridge. This is going to be a national pride.
Let us hope that national pride positively motivates Bangladesh.
