West Indies need 35 more runs to win the test
In what looked a one-way traffic in the first match of Padma Bridge test series Bangladesh had back-to-wall 6/109 still needing 53 runs for avoiding yet another embarrassing innings defeat. Captain Shakib pairing with wicket keeper batsman Nurun Hasan Sohan produced an excellent 123 runs 7th wicket partnership. Shakib producing yet another quality half century 63 to be exact and Sohan matching his superior captain strokes for stokes played an innings of authority (64).
It looked like they were going to take the lead to a fighting position. With the second new champion West Indies pacer Keamar Roach removed Shakib and Sohan and wrapped up the tail.
His 5/53 not only completed his 50 wickets in 9 tests at Sir Vivian Richards stadium in 9 tests but also equaled his test tally to 249 wickets with great Michael Holding. Bangladesh got up 83 runs lead.
Spurred by brilliant fighting partnership Bangladesh rocked West Indies reducing them to 3/9 in no time.
Khaled in a superb spell of controlled pace bowling got rid of Brathwaitte, Reifer and Bonner before Campbell and Blackwood steadied the ship finishing at 49/3 at stumps of day three.
Bangladesh at least did not die wondering. It was cricket character that was shown by Bangladesh at long last.
Bangladesh started the day 50/2 in the second innings still trailing by 112 runs for avoiding dreaded innings defeat. Nazmul Hasan Shanto (17) and Mominul Haq (4) were fooled by Mayers soon making it 4/71. Litton Das tried to resurrect the innings with Joy for a while.
But again, Roach removed both in quick succession pushing Bangladesh at dire state at 6/109. Like the first Innings Captain Shakib looked unnerved playing his natural self. This time he had able partner in Nurul Sohan. The pair playing to the merits of every delivery rescued Bangladesh from total humiliation.
They took the score to 232 when a tired looking Shakib trying to force one delivery of Roach through the covers was caught by Kraigg Bangladesh innings lost momentum as Sohan also fell to a brilliant delivery of Rocah for 64.
The introduction of the second new ball played the tricks. Bangladesh innings folded at 245, which gave them 83 runs lead.
Roach completed his half century of test wickets at the venue in 9 tests. This incidentally was his 249 test wickets equaling his achievement with great Michael Holding.
The fighting spirits of Bangladesh pair raised the confidence so much that they rocked West Indies when they came to start their chase for victory.
Khaled in his first two overs had Braithwaite and Reifer caught behind by Sohan and cleaned up Bonner. Suddenly WI started looking panicked a bit.
However, Campbell (28*) and Blackwood weathered the storm and by stumps took them to 49/3.
The outcome of the test is a foregone conclusion. But it was great watching Bengal tigers showing their teeth finally. Shakib had two brilliant half centuries in the match, Sohan produced an excellent innings of 64. Khaled really bowled well. Joy applied for his 42.
This could be a different match had Bangladesh did not crumble to 103 in the first innings. Credit must also go to Kemar Roach for his excellent pace bowling. He is a master pacer and has a great liking of bowling against Bangladesh.
