Bangladesh Leads The series (1-0)
Team tigers gave jubilant Bangladeshis a lot to cheer about crushing West Indies to 6 wickets defeat in the rain-curtailed first ODI at Providence Stadium Guyana.
It was the 9th consecutive win of Bangladesh against the West Indies in ODI. It must have given a sigh of relief breaking the losing cycle. The morale was sagging after getting white-washed in the Test series and losing the T20 series 2-0. It will be a huge morale booster if they win the ODI series. Bangladesh has a 9th ODI match against West Indies on the trot.
Much better organized, much more confident-looking Bangladesh made a winning start of the favorite ODI format winning the first of three matches ODI series. Losing the toss and being asked to bat on a drying wicket, gripping and stopping, West Indies managed to score 149/9 in truncated 41 overs. Bangladesh
Bangladesh's bowling was precise and incisive. Pacers varied their pace smartly. Spinners gave nothing away. Shoriful (4/34) and Miraj (3/36), teased and tormented WI batsmen. Debutant Nasum getting an opportunity in the absence of Shakib bowled exceeding well giving away only 16 runs in his 8 overs. Mustafiz removed Shai Hope with his very first ball and could get at least one more had not Mahmudullah and Afif grasped catches. He himself dropped one of his own bowling.
Bangladesh could restrict WI even below 100 if 4 easy catches were not grasped and top scorer Brooks did not escape an LBW shout very early. These are part of the games anyway. But the bottom line is a team almost forgetting to win across formats is back in winning mode.
Bangladesh's reply also had an early jolt. Litton fell very early to Akeal Hosein. Tamim was at his fluent best. The 2nd wicket partnership was developing. 40 runs were added in 5 overs. Perhaps Tamim could have avoided risking a sharp run . The direct throw of Philips found him short.
He could convert his 25 balls 33 into a big one leading his team towards the target. Yet another flowering Tamim innings was nipped in the bud.
Shanto looked well in his groove. He and Riad were cruising. 49 runs were put together on the 3rd wicket. Shanto somehow lost his cool. He had no reason to drive in the air Gurukesh Moti delivery to Pooran. Gurukesh got his maiden wicket. Bangladesh batsman must have the patience to carry the team across the rope having set roots at the wicket. It always creates a challenge for a new batsman. Riad was also lucky as Pooran’s ball that disturbed his furniture was ruled no-ball. Afif unnecessarily attacked Pooran presenting him with his wicket. Riad and Sohan expertly took Tiger across the target with an unbroken 40 Runs 5th Wicket partnership.
A good toss to win, excellent bowling, and patience in batting won the match. Tamim could inspire by leading from the front. Considering that Shakib, Mushfifue, Yasir, and Saifuddin are not there Tamim and his tiger squad deserves lots of accolades.
