The bulk power tariff has been raised by 19.92 to Tk 6.20 per kilowatt hour (each unit) from previous Tk 5.17 with effect from March 3, 2022.
Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Md Abdul Jalil today (Nov 21) announced the decision to raise the tariff disposing the review appeal of state-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to raise bulk power tariff on Tuesday.
However, the new tariff will not be effective for retail consumers. It will be effective only for power distribution companies and for some other bulk consumers.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has increased the electricity price by 19.92 per cent at bulk level.
Power Development Board (PDB) earlier made a proposal to the regulatory commission to hike the price in January but the commission rejected that. On November 14, PDB filed an appeal after one month of the decision.
According to power division sources, the distribution companies will propose to increase the power tariff at the consumer level after implementation of the decision to hike prices at the bulk level.
The power tariff has been increased nine times in the past 10 years. The BERC for the last time increased the price of per unit of electricity to Tk 5.17 in February, 2020.
