BAT Bangladesh is awaiting Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Gold Certification for sustainable water use in its facilities in Dhaka and Kushtia that would undergo a surveillance audit this month.
It had earlier this year secured AWS core certification that has made it the first company in Bangladesh to secure the recognition.
Currently, both the sites – BATB’s Dhaka Factory and Green Leaf Threshing Plant, Kushtia – are working their way towards zero liquid discharge plants.
Through the adoption of the AWS Standard, the company has created a positive impact on diverse local stakeholders in the value chain.
Water stewardship is the use of water that is socially and culturally equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial and achieved through a stakeholder-inclusive process involving both site and catchment-based actions.
BATB has worked hand in hand with all its stakeholders in an open and transparent manner by raising awareness and sharing best practices to foster good water governance, identify shared water challenges, set mitigation plans and sustain water availability in its catchments.
It has set ambitious Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals of decreasing water withdrawal by 35 per cent and increasing water recycling to 30 per cent by 2025. Accordingly, BATB has taken various initiatives and optimised its processes through a collaboration of its engineering and sustainability teams.
A robust water management system has also been in practice for both sites and adherence to these processes is tracked on a regular frequency.
The company has developed, defined and established processes for violation of any of these practices as well.
BATB is committed to creating a net of cooperation and assistance with public and private organisations to address the shared water challenges. It believes in constantly upgrading itself, growing together, and creating a better tomorrow shaped by the sustainable actions of today.
