Hide without salt in tanneries, trader complains of low price

It has been alleged that the hide of the sacrificial animals is being brought to the tannery without following the government directives.

On Monday (July 11) this morning, most of the rawhide that arrived at the tanneries in the leather industrial city, Savar was found without salt. However, the government directive was to preserve the hide of sacrificial animals with salt on their own initiative.

As a result, the price of rawhide has been reduced by the tannery owners. Due to this reason, the seasonal traders fell into trouble.

Seasonal traders complain that the tannery owners are buying rawhide at a cheaper price than the price fixed by the government. However, denying the tannery owners said the allegations are baseless.

The tannery owners said the seasonal traders are bringing hide without following the government directives, due to which, the price of the rawhide is getting lower.

Trader Aftab told banglanews that “I went around a few tanneries, they wanted to pay Tk 500 to 600. If we give at this price, we will have a complete loss”.

Was the rawhide salted? When asked a question, he said, “I didn't have time to apply salt on any hide”.

Zahiruddin Sarkar, project director of Anjuman Tannery, located in Savar leather industry city, said that most of the rawhide is with blood and without salt. Our workers are applying salt to preserve the hides, but we are buying at price fixed by the government.

Sakhawat Ullah, Bangladesh Tannery Association’s General Secretary and Managing Director of Salma Tannery said “we are buying rawhides at the price fixed by the government”.

He said the situation is normal this year, our target is to collect 1 crore plus rawhides.

The tanneries are saying that this year, the hides of sacrificial animals are being bought at Tk 750 to 600, and if the salted hides start coming, the price will mount up further.
