3 telecom fined for illegal VoIP: BTRC

The country's three private mobile phone operators have paid Taka 2,78,25,000 as administrative fines due to the use of their SIMs in illegal VoIP.

The telecom regulator, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), has imposed a financial penalty on the operators for the unauthorised use of their SIMs in the illicit call termination, said a media release today.

It said Robi deposited a pay order of Taka 2.10 crore to the BTRC today, while Grameenphone Taka was 52.50 Lakh on July 13 and Banglalink Taka 15.75 Lakh on July 12.

A Commission meeting, chaired by its Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder, on April 10 directed the operators as per the decision of hearing to deposit the penalty amount.

The regulator took the decision according to section 65 (5) of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulation Act 2001.
