Give 25pc of seized gold to concerned officers: BAJUS President

Bangladesh Jeweller's Association (BAJUS) President Sayem Sobhan Anvir has made a request to the authorities concerned to award 25 percent of recovered gold to the members of customs and law enforcement agencies concerned.

BAJUS President sent three separate letters to Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and National Board of Revenue Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem requesting them to take necessary step in this regard to encourage the officials to step up drives to stop gold smuggling.

“Take my greetings. We have been impressed by the standard of your work. Thank you on behalf of BAJUS for your role in preventing smuggling,” reads the letter signed by BAJUS president.

He wrote, “Law enforcement agencies and customs authorities have been continuously conducting various operations so that no criminals and smugglers can carry out anti-national and illegal activities. Gold smuggling has reduced to a great extent across the country. Many smugglers have been prosecuted and punished. It increases the revenue of the government.”

The BAJUS president also requested to issue necessary instructions to all organisations under these ministries so that no smuggler can bring gold or ornaments by illegal means and smuggle those into other countries.

“Some 25 per cent of the total amount of gold recovered by members of law enforcement agencies including customs authorities should be given as reward to the members of the agencies for preventing smuggling,” he said.

Sayem Sobhan Anvir said that BAJUS proposal is to encourage the members of the law enforcement agencies to prevent smuggling.

If the proposal is implemented, the prevention of gold smuggling will accelerate and wastage of foreign currency of the country will reduce, said BAJUS President hoped.
