IUB Theatre stages classic folk play 'Dewana Madina'

The IUB Theatre staged the folk musical play “Dewana Madina'' at the IUB Auditorium on November 28, 2023 as part of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy’s nationwide campaign to organize stage shows of classic folk tales. This is the first time that IUB Theatre has staged a play with a national donation.

Dewana Madina, part of the famous Bengali folk anthology Maimansingha Gitika, was written by Mansoor Bayati. The play explores themes of love, separation, and heartbreak in Madina's relationship with Dulal, a homeless man.

Directed by Md. Shamim Sagar and co-directed by Md. Saiful Islam, it was the 21st production of IUB Theatre. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is conducting the ‘Chirayat Bangla Natok Monchayan’ program in 64 districts and 14 universities under the leadership of Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky.

Tanweer Hasan, PhD, Vice Chancellor, IUB; Mr. Ali Ahmed Mukul, Deputy Director of Theater and Film Department, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; Mr. Al Jabir, Associate Professor of Theater and Performance Department, National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University; and Ms. Momtaz Parvin, Coordinator of IUB Theater enjoyed the play from the audience.

The cast included IUB students Anika Bushra Shoshe, Md Basitullah Khan, Sanjida Akter Mim, Md Tauhidul Islam, Abdullah Al Mahin Siam, Ashraful Karim Chowdhury, Muballig Hoq Mridha, Mubasshir Aal Zami Siam, Sowharda Paul, Samia Reza Maisha, Anika Fyruse, MD Shoumic Uddin Mahi, and Sadia Afrin Aorna.

Additionally, the Veins Band, Jahid Hasan, Slagha Adhikari, Sharif Mohammad Shahjalal Paran, SM Shakeel Amin and the IUB Music Club sang and played different musical instruments in the background.
