Dean of Dhaka University (DU) Social Science Faculty Professor Dr Zia Rahman passed away at a private hospital in the capital early today.
He was 58.
"Zia Rahman, professor of Criminology Department, breathed his last around 4:15 am in the capital's Labaid Hospital while undergoing treatment," DU Proctor Prof Maksudur Rahman confirmed.
"Sir passed away following a heart-attack. He was rushed to the hospital around 3:45am, where on-duty doctors declared him dead shortly after at 4:15am," said ABM Nazmus Shakib, an Assistant Prof of Criminology Department.
His first Namaz-e-janaza was held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University after Zuhr prayers, said family sources.

Prof Zia Rahman began his teaching career as a Lecturer and Assistant
Professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology before joining Dhaka University's Department of Sociology as a faculty member in 1997.
He also served as a Board Director of the International Society of
Criminology and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Research in Social Sciences at Dhaka University.
From 2013 to 2020, he led the university's Department of Criminology as its founding Chairman.
In a condolence message, the DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Prof Zia Rahman. He prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
