16 hurt in attack on CU teachers’ bus

CHITTAGONG: At least sixteen people, including twelve teachers, of Chittagong University sustained injuries in crude bomb attacks by Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, on two buses carrying the varsity’s teachers on Wednesday morning.

They were attacked on Chittagong-Hathazari road at 10:30am on their way to campus from the port city.

The teachers are Sabrin Alam of Applied Physics, Sonom Akter and Sunanda of Bio-Chemistry and Molecular Biology Science, Shirin Ara Chowdhury, Associate Professor of Management Studies, Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif, Associate Professor of Finance and Banking Department, Professor Mohammad Taib Chowdhury of Marketing Studies and International Marketing, Sudipta Barua of Pali Department, M Ashrafuzzaman of Anthropology, Fatema-tuz-Johra of Sociology and Anwar Syed of Bengali Department, Syed Halima Begum and Dipankar Sreegwan Barua of Chemistry Department.

Besides, students Amrita Nag and Anika Akter, drivers Mahbub and Arif also sustained injuries.

Naik of CMCH police outpost Abul Bashar said that twelve of them were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. 

Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif, Associate Professor of Finance and Banking Department said around 15-20 Shibir activists hurled brick-chips aiming the buses in Chharerkul area and blasted several crude bombs, leaving the teachers, students and drivers injured.

Islami Chhatra Shibir has been enforcing a strike under the banner of ‘general students’ for past ten days demanding hand over two student halls to the allotted students.

Several incidents of attacks on shuttle train and buses were reported in those days.
