2nd time students pass more in DU

DHAKA UNIVERSITY: At least 56 percent out total students passed the Dhaka University admission tests for the current academic session (2014-15) appearing for the second time.

In a surprise move, the university authorities on Tuesday announced they would no longer allow students to sit for the admission for the second time.

Student can sit for the test that year when they pass their Higher Secondary Certificate examinations, according to the new announcement.

The announcement would take effect from the academic session 2015-16.

University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique made announcement following a meeting of the university’s admission committee on that day.

But, the data acquired from the university admission office shows more numbers of the students who took the test for second time got the pass marks than that of the students who sat for the first time.

According to the university admission office, only 30 percent students who sat for the admission test of the university’s Faculty of Biological Sciences for the first time this year got the pass marks. Remaining 70 percent took the test for second time.

Professor Hasibur Rahman Rashid, convener of the university’s online admission committee, told banglanews, some 53.4 percent students who sat for the second time got admission in the academic session 2013-2014 while 48.6 percent in the academic session 2012-2013.

Meanwhile, students who passed the HSC in 2014 claimed that the university authorities somewhat did injustice to them. If the authorities made the announcement prior to the admission test this year they would have got themselves more prepared for the tests, alleged the students.

On the new announcement, the VC said that students who sit for the second time get plenty of time for preparation rather than the students who take the test for the first time.

Approximately 300 seats fell vacant in the university every year as students change their disciplines sitting for the test in second time, added the VC.
