Nahid for proper education to curb militancy

DHAKA: Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Saturday (July 30) said no student would tread the path of militancy if they get proper education from family and educational institutions.

He made the assertion while addressing a view exchange meeting at International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) in city’s Segun Bagicha area in the afternoon on the role of vocational education teachers to avert militancy in the country.

The Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) and Directorate of Technical Education organized the meeting.

Mentioning that the government’s directive was misexplained, Nahid said no student can be regarded as militant if they remain absent in the educational institution for 10 days at a stretch.

“We directed the institutions to contact the absent student’s parents. There is no problem if the parents can come up with proper explanations of the absence.”

“If parents are found anxious, then it has to be reported to us through the upazila education officer,” he added.

He also put emphasis on cultural activities, sports and other extracurricular activities for the students.

With education secretary Sohrab Hossain in the chair, Directorate of Technical Education director Mizanur Rahman, BTEB chairman Mostafizur Rahman, National Polytechnic Institute chairman Shamsur Rahman and IDEB chairman AKMA Hamid also addressed the program.
