Pvt varsities asked to form anti-militancy monitoring cell

DHAKA: University Grand Commission (UGC) asked the private university authorities to form monitoring cell to avert terrorism and militancy.

UGC additional director (public relations) M Omar Farukh told this matter to banglanews on Thursday (August 4).

The university authorities also asked to send the development reports regarding the cell and its activities.

Earlier on July 31, UGC chairman professor Abdul Mannan said in a press briefing that there are reportedly 33 militants in nine universities. Among them, 18 are in four public universities and 15 in five private universities.

After that, the UGC has taken several measures to avert the unwanted situation.

A three-member committee led by UGC member Dr M Akhtar Hossain has been formed to investigate the militant involvement in private universities.

The other members are commission’s private university division deputy director Jesmin Parveen and deputy secretary M Shahin Siraj.
