Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon has said the July Uprising was essential and justified, describing it as a “once-in-a-lifetime” moment of people’s power and freedom.
In a Facebook post today, Badhon wrote, “Anyone who says the July Uprising was wrong — I honestly feel sorry for them. That uprising was absolutely necessary at that moment in time.”
She said people’s suffering and injustice had reached a breaking point and accused the former government of gradually becoming more fascist by stripping away citizens’ rights and voices.
“There was no other way out,” she added, recalling the overwhelming joy on the streets when the former leader fled the country on August 5.
“That joy was real, and I felt it with every heartbeat,” Badhon wrote.
She acknowledged that not everything that followed the uprising was perfect but insisted the movement was the right thing at the right time.
