Dwarka Das Welfare Society (DDWS) with the support of Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) stood by 1,800 poor ophthalmic patients in Kushtia.

DDWS supported by BEHRI organised a daylong eye camp on the Dwarka Das Agarwala Mohila College premises at Harinarayanpur in the district on Tuesday.

Sources at DDWS said eyes of the 1, 800 poor and elderly people were examined and provided necessary treatment, medicines and glasses for free.

Of the patients, 260 have been selected for eye surgeries to be held at Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute in Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka.

Surgeries of the first batch of the patients are likely to start on May 10, sources added.  

Prof Dr Md Saleh Uddin, a renowned eye specialist and director of BEHRI, along with Dr Zerin Parvin, Dr Majumder Golam Rabbi, and Dr Mustakin Monir and eight ophthalmic technologists conducted the medical team.

Gitanjali Jewellers chairman Paban Kumar Agarwal established Dwarka Das Welfare Society to serve the helpless people in the area. He was present at the eye camp.

Earlier, Dwarka Das Welfare Society in association with the BEHRI organised eye camps and arranged surgeries of the underprivileged people free of cost.
