Free bone marrow transplantation for poor

DHAKA: The government is going to offer free bone marrow transplantation for the poor so that they can get better health service.

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim came up with the assertion in a press briefing at the new building of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday.

The ruling Awami League lawmaker said the patients with these sorts of complexities often go to India or Singapore for expensive treatment. 

Bangladesh is going to avail the treatment with minimum expenses even the poor and helpless people will be served free, he added. 

Nasim said the bone marrow transplantation unit started its successful journey on March 10, under Hematology Department in the hospital.

The Head of the Hematology Department, Dr MA Khan said the treatment expenses around Tk 1 crore in Singapore, it costs half of that in India where expenses only Tk five lakh in bone marrow transplantation in Bangladesh.

Health State Minister Dr Jahid Malik and Health Secretary SM Niaz Uddin were among others present at the press meet.
