HABIGANJ: This year saw more number of people newly-infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (widely known as AIDS) than the last year.

The data was revealed on Sunday in Habiganj.

Morshed Bilal Khan, Manager (Advocacy) of Save the Children said Bangladesh recorded 1726 HIV infections till May 2014, meanwhile among them 482 died.

Habiganj Civil Surgeon Office arranged a workshop at noon at their auditorium with the cooperation of Save the Children and Ashar Alo.

Speakers said that the first case of HIV AIDS was detected in Bangladesh in 1989.

However, UN estimates the number of HIV patient will be between 8,000 and 16,000, which means many are left undetected and untreated.
