COMILLA: At least eight people were killed and eight others injured in a road accident in Mainamati area of the district on Saturday evening.

Of the deceased, six were identified as Hasina Begum, 32, wife of Barek Mia and Rozina Akter, 25, wife of Swapon Mia of Mainamati and Nazrul Islam, 50, Rokshana, 27, Morsheda Begum, 30 and Abdur Rashid, 35 of Rangpur district.

Witnesses said a Comilla-bound covered van rammed passersby and three rickshaws in Mainamati bus stop area, leaving the five dead on the spot and 12 others injured.

Three of them succumbed to their injuries at Mainamati Combined Military Hospital. Another injured in the hospital was in critical condition.

In-Charge of Mainamati Police Outpost Moshiur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Other injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital and adjacent clinics.
