DHAKA: Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury flew for New York on Sunday night to participate in the 8th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) annual meeting scheduled to be held here on November 12-13.

The conference, arranged by the IPU for Women Speakers of Parliament, aims to highlight the gender dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the new development framework that is to emerge in 2015 when the current Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expire.

How can women contribute to a new model of sustainable development? Should the demands for equal rights and opportunities go beyond the prevailing growth model? These are some of the questions the annual IPU Women Speakers of Parliament meeting will try to answer.

Dr Shirin Sharmin left Shahjalal International Airport of Dhaka around 10:00pm.

She is scheduled to return in the country on November 17.
