50 RMG factories shut amid unrest

ASHULIA (DHAKA): The authorities concerned declared closed more than 50 readymade garments factories in Jirabo area of Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital, Monday morning amid workers unrest.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to thwart further unrest.

Besides, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed and water canons and armoured cars of police are patrolling in the area.

Sources said thousands of agitating RMG worker’s unrest in the industrial area is underway on the demand of implementation of salary structure, declared by the Wage Commission.

Some of the workers also were locked into chase and counter chase with law enforcers in the area.

Law enforcers charged baton and fired rubber bullets and used water canons to take the situation under control, leaving 50 workers injured.

Meanwhile, fearing sabotage and vandalism, authorities have shut down their factories for the day.
