A youth drowned in the river while smuggling 10.263kg of gold tied to his waist along Chuadanga border on Sunday (October 8).
The deceased was identified as Miraj Hussain, 22, son of Yeasin Ali.
Miraj’s body was recovered from Mathabhanga River in Nastipur village of Damurhuda upazila around 6 pm.
According to police, Miraj had been smuggling gold in India for a long time. On Sunday afternoon he was smuggling a large amount of gold bars from Bangladesh to India through the river. At one point, he drowned in the river and disappeared. His body was found two hours after he went missing. Later, the dead body was recovered from the spot with the help of fire service.
Darshana Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biplab Kumar Saha confirmed the matter.
He said the body of the deceased has been sent to Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy. Legal matter is pending in that incident.
Director of Chuadanga-6 BGB Lieutenant Colonel Syed Mohammad Zahidur Rahman said Miraj's body was searched and 68 gold bars weighing 10.263kg were recovered. The market value of the gold is Tk 9.20 crore. The recovered gold bars will be deposited at the Chuadanga Treasury Office.
